How to Get Started
Get Started
Thinking about getting started in fencing, or just want to come see what it's all about? Come on out! Below, you'll find all kinds of details for beginners. If you don't find your answer below, feel free to contact us and ask. To learn more about the Rise philosophy and how we like to run our classes, check out that page.
Who
You!
Fencing is great exercise and entertainment for the whole family! The only consideration would be whether the student could respect and wield a sword. We currently have students of all ages, from 6 to 60+

Beginning fencers will learn the basic fencing stance (en garde), advance, retreat, lunge, basic parries and riposte. The emphasis is on developing strong basic skills. Masks, foils and jackets are provided.

Intermediate fencers will have more of a focus on bouting strategies and techniques and will spend more time fencing the instructor and each other. Emphasis will also be placed on learning to judge a bout. The fencers will fence electric bout.
What Weapons
Foil, Épée and Sabre are the three weapons used in the sport of fencing. While it is not unusual for fencers to compete in all three events, they generally choose to develop their skills in one weapon. All three are point-thrusting weapons and the sabre is also a cutting weapon. The target areas differ for the three weapons, though all are scored electrically.
When
We have classes on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 6:30 to 8:00pm with a beginners' class on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:00 to 6:30.
Mondays and Wednesdays are instructional days while Fridays are mostly a time to focus on tournament fencing, but our coaches are available on Fridays as well and will not turn away an eager student.

Rules
Sound fun & easy? It is!
Are there rules? Of course!
Fencing could be a dangerous sport but we emphasize safety in everything we do.
Here are the rules, for the record:
  1. Safety first! Absolutely NO HORSEPLAY with weapons!
  2. Weapons should be carried with point toward the floor or ceiling unless actively fencing.
  3. Masks must be worn AT ALL TIMES when fencing or practicing with weapons.
  4. Fence in control! Violent fencing actions are not permitted. Rough bodily contact (corps-a-corps) is not permitted.
  5. If you think a weapon is broken, stop fencing immediately, retreat and wave your unarmed hand. Stop fencing immediately if your opponent gives this sign or gives any sign of wanting to stop.
  6. Pay attention to your surroundings! When people are fencing, walk next to walls to move around the room. Do not walk between fencers.
  7. Be respectful! Answer adults with "Yes, sir" and "Yes, ma'am". Maintain eye contact when an instructor is speaking to you.
  8. If you feel that someone is behaving in a dangerous fashion, report it privately to an instructor. Your identity will nto be disclosed.
